A Tidbit on The Importance of Hand Posture

Writer: Yessenia CollinsYessenia Collins

When playing the piano or any keyboard instrument your wrist and your arm should stay aligned. Your hand should resemble the shape of gently holding a softball and your fingertips should be what strikes the keys. But why? This hand posture ensures that you have full control of the sound that you intend to produce. Especially when playing an acoustic instrument, the angle in which you strike a key will change the quality of the sound that you turn out. Additionally, this hand posture is the healthiest way to play the piano and even to type. Prolonged typing or playing the piano with sharp angles on the wrist come with higher propensity to develop muscle and joint fatigue and may lead to carpal tunnel syndrome.
