My First Ever Piano Student

Writer: Yessenia CollinsYessenia Collins

I was sixteen years old when my mom and my uncle Tico helped me develop my business. My uncle created and printed my business cards and my mom who worked as a bank teller would slip a card in along with customer's receipts whenever she saw that there were kids in the car. At some point shortly after she started distributing the cards I received my very first phone call inquiring about piano lessons. The lady on the line whom I would later know as Patty, asked me about rates, location, and others logistics. We came to an agreement to start lessons the following week. She showed up on time and rang the doorbell. I opened the door to greet her and she looked over my shoulder and asked me "where's your mom?" I told her something along the lines of "she's in her room, but I'm the piano teacher." I'm pretty sure there were several seconds of awkward silence as she made up her mind whether she would be moving forward with lessons. Later after having had several months of lessons, she admitted to having gone home that day after the very first lesson and sharing with her husband that although she had reservations about taking lessons from a sixteen year old (she was forty), she was going to give me a chance. I'm eternally grateful for the opportunity to have started my career as a piano pedagogue with such an unorthodox teacher-student match. Thank you Patty for enabling my teaching debut!
